In May 1997 a national consensus conference on antimicrobial resistance was convened in Montreal. The result of the conference was the creation of an Integrated Action Plan for Canadians on Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance.

CCAR Vision: "Canada will be an international leader in the prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance."

CCAR may be involved as the project champion in certain circumstances, especially where other organizations are not able to lead or where pilot activities, statistical research or new areas of involvement are required. CCAR will not act as a funding agency but rather help organizations identify and access suitable funding mechanisms.

CCAR Mission: "CCAR advocates for, facilitates and promotes programs related to surveillance, optimal antimicrobial use and infection prevention and control to limit antimicrobial resistance."

CCAR was incorporated under the Canada Incorporations Act on June 28, 2004. The membership is expected to evolve over the life of CCAR. Members are public sector or not-for-profit private sector organizations.
